Difference between Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) and EICR
Electrical Installation Certificate and EICR both are different reports having different purposes, different inspection scope and validity period is also not the same.
An Electrical Installation Certificate is required and mandatory when your property gets the new major electrical installation work or when alterations or modifications are carried out and required for a newly built home. It certifies that new changes or modifications or new wiring complies with BS-7671. It contains the information & details about the alterations or about new system showing test results and declaration by the qualified electrician confirming electrics is safe to use. An Electrical Installation Certificate is valid for 10 years.
Whereas an EICR is carried out on your existing electrical installations showing results either satisfactory or unsatisfactory consisting circuit schedule and test results. An EICR is valid for 5 years for rented properties and 10 years for owner occupied properties. For commercial premises, electrical testing & inspection is recommended after frequent intervals. EICR testing is mandatory for rental properties.

EICR Certificate cost is based on the size of the property, type of the property and number of fuseboxes. Price range for an EICR Studio Flat £79.00, Up to 2 bedrooms £99, Up to 4 bedrooms £119 and up to 6 bedrooms £149.
Electrical Installation Certificate cost is also based on the size and type of property and extent of the new installations carried out on the property. The average cost is between £500 – £800 for an electrical installation certificate. A qualified electrician will test and certify any major works or alterations and new wiring by carrying out different checks and will issue you an EIC taking responsibility for the work done by someone else. Preferably any alterations or new wiring should be done by a qualified person for making him easier to issue you an electrical installation certificate without charging any extra money to avoid extra costs.
